Frank and Jennie Maietta are encouraged by what they believe is a growing opportunity for Baptist church planting in Italy. Looking back at the history of Baptist work in the country, they point to earlier periods when churches multiplied and people responded to the preaching of the Bible. They believe two lessons remain important today: Bible preaching is generally well received in Italy, and each generation must be reached with the Gospel.
Since arriving in Grosseto in 2006, the Maiettas have seen the Lord establish a church in an area once considered a difficult mission field. They are especially encouraged by growth during the past 15 years. There are now around 15 Baptist church planters in Italy, two weeks of Baptist camp are being organized, Bible training is developing, Gospel materials are being translated and printed, and an Italian national has been ordained and sent out to plant a Baptist church in Foggia. Their church in Grosseto is also helping prepare future missionaries through Bible-college internships and mission trips.
Even with this progress, the need remains great. Italy has 20 regions and 107 provinces, and the Maiettas are praying for many more missionaries and churches. Their desire is not simply to see more foreign missionaries, but ultimately to see qualified and trained Italian believers carry the work of church planting throughout their own country. Their appeal is simple: pray for laborers, consider the tremendous need, and “Give Italy a chance.”
Pray that God will send more missionaries and church planters to Italy.
Pray for the approximately 15 Baptist church planters currently serving throughout the country.
Pray for the development of Italian pastors, preachers, and church leaders.
Pray for the growing Bible training and camp ministries.
Pray for the translation and distribution of sound Bible study resources in Italian.
Pray for the new Baptist church plant in Foggia and other developing works.
Pray that God will use internships and mission trips to call future missionaries to Italy.
Pray for the long-term goal of seeing Italian believers establish and strengthen churches throughout their own country.
